Misfits
Who Are We?

The Misfits were formed whilst we were attending a one-week residential summer school at Durham University in 2002 which accompanied the Open University course S260 - Geology. We had such a good time together we decided to keep in touch and have managed a weekend away together each year since.

The original Misfits were:

We have since also adopted Peter and Welsh Mike

Lynfa

Lynfa and Little Mike were lab partners at Durham.

Lynfa organised the 2004 trip to South Wales where she somehow managed to talk Welsh Mike into helping to lead our ragged band and he's been with us ever since.

Lynfa is the retiring President of the Geologists' Association - South Wales Group.

Lynne & Peter

Lynne was one of the original founding Misfits and lab partner during our week at Durham with Big Mike.

Lynne's claim to fame at Durham was the putting in her rucksack of a not-so-freshly-dead puffin at Staithes beach which she took home and buried so the flesh could rot away before putting the resulting skeleton on display at the nature park where she works.

On the 2003 trip to Malvern Lynne brought her tame rock-carrier (and husband) Peter along to sherpa for her. After exhibiting sterling carrying, lugging and hauling qualities Peter was voted in as a fully-fledged Misfit at the end of the 2004 trip to South Wales.

Big Mike (Mike Johnson)

Big Mike is very tall. He is also particularly noticable in the field due to his unique headgear - health and safety guidelines require us to wear a hard hat whenever studying any feature taller that our foreheads as something might fall on us - Big Mike's hat is a 1920s coal miner's tin helmet which was painted pale blue by his (now grown-up) children some years ago.

Big Mike was Lynne's lab partner at Durham and managed the notable achievement of running over his own luggage in his car when leaving the summer school.

Little Mike (Mike Grover)

Little Mike was a nickname that stuck only because of the gargantuan height of Big Mike and we needed to distinguish between the two when hollering at each other out in the field.

If you pass your mouse over the photo to the left, the second photo is of him discussing stratigraphy with Lynfa (his original lab partner).

Little Mike was renamed Mike the Chronicler in 2004 in honour of his impressive reporting skills.

Welsh Mike (Mike Lees)

Welsh Mike is called Mike and is from Wales! We considered calling him Middle Mike but felt we needed to break away from size notation - just imagine, if we adopt more Mikes we would finish up with a Sort Of Largeish Mike or a Really Quite Tiny Mike etc so other attributes were utilised in the naming process. Welsh Mike was ensnared to the Misfits by Lynfa.
